How to Build Self-confidence After Repeated Losses

December 10, 2018

When disaster strikes over and over again, you can feel hopeless. Just when you thought that things were going to finally work out in your favor, you experience another loss of some sort. How does one build self-confidence under those circumstances?

Secure your core

You start with your foundation. Your self-confidence can’t be built on losses. It has to be built on things that are not going to change. Your core must be solid in order to stay grounded during hard times. You need God, emotional management, and powerful life strategies.

Acknowledge the pain

Often times, when we experience repeated losses, we stop feeling. We can easily become numb to our own feelings because facing it seems too hard. But you cannot if you don’t address the issues. After you face your problems, you will feel better.

Forgive everyone involved

Anytime you harbor feelings of bitterness, you keep yourself stuck. It makes you feel bad inside. Don’t blame yourself for what happened. It’s common for people to look for a source to blame when there are losses. Maybe you or someone else were part of the issues. So what! What are you going to do with that information? Forgive yourself and anyone else who is to blame. You will give yourself permission to heal.

Change your perspective

No matter how many losses you’ve had, it’s all about what you do after you have them. If you’ve gone through multiple hardships and you continue to bounce back, there is something amazing about you. The mere fact that you are still trying and searching for answers is huge. You might think you’re doomed to fail. But you’re really designed for greatness.

See yourself as a winner

You are not a failure, and you never will be. Seeing yourself as a failure will disempower you. God created you to be victorious. Yes, you have failed. We all have. But that’s not an identity, it’s only a part of the overall mission.

Seek outside help

God blesses us through relationships. If you've experienced any kind of trauma, reach out to someone who can help you. You may need counseling. They can help you build your self- confidence. Stay in a good community of faith-filled people, family, and friends. We all need encouragement sometimes.

Stay away from negative stuff

The last thing you need to hear is negative information. You need hope and motivation. Be mindful of the people and information you surround yourself with. On the hand, positive words and people can truly bless you.

In a nutshell, your self-confidence will increase when you nurture your foundation and practice key elements to overcome adversity.  Losses will happen. And if they happen repeatedly, that’s even more painful. But “All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord, and are called according to his purpose(Romans 8:28).” No matter what you have been through, God can turn it around and use it for his glory.  Build your confidence in knowing that he can heal your pain, and you can bless other people through your testimony.
