4 Reasons Why Positive Affirmations Don't Work for You
Okay, so you’ve heard all the talk about how positive affirmations can change your life. But when you used them yourself, you didn’t have as much success. Maybe you felt good for a moment, then you went back to feeling the same way later. Let me start by saying that positive affirmations can be a great tool if you use them in conjunction with other things. They are not a replacement for the Word of God, and they never will be. You still need to renew your mind day and night with scripture. But remember, Proverbs 18:21 says, “ Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” Our words will impact us, in a major way. Therefore, saying positive words is instrumental in feeling better. They can help you feel more confident. If they aren’t working for you, here are a few reasons why:
1. You don’t believe them: They’re too extreme
I know you think that this is a no-brainer at first glance. After all, isn’t that the point in using positive affirmations? Yes, that's true. We are trying to change our belief with positive affirmations. But we have to be realistic. If you’ve always believed you were ugly, suddenly saying that you are beautiful probably won’t work. Start neutral.
2. You don't use them often enough
How often do you use your positive affirmations? If you say a few nice words here and there. You won’t see the results you desire. When I first start coaching a client, I recommend that they read them out loud twice a day, until the words start to set in.
3. Your negative thoughts counteract them
Do you do thought declutters? You could be saying positive words, but your thought patterns say something different. You need to clean your negative thoughts out. Get out of your own head, so you can change your thinking. You might need help with this!
4. You don’t take action
“Faith without works is dead” James 2:26. If you want to do well on a test, you might say something like” I’m going to get a great score,” That’s good in theory. But if you never study then those words will be null and void. Do something that aligns with what you are saying.
All the things mentioned above are fixable. Your self-confidence can grow immensely. You will see progress if you use them. Here’s an affirmation for you "I am fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14. Find more affirmations that apply to you and your situation. You will see the results!
